Three Step Sparring – (Sambo Matsoki)

This is the introduction to sparring and the first type of sparring a Tae Kwon Do student does as a yellow tag (9th Kup). The benefits of three step sparring include:

· Facing an opponent.
· Development of distance for blocks and counter attacks.
· Learning basic targets.
· Improving timing.Sparring starting position

Starting Position is the attacker in a Left Walking Stance Outer Forearm Low Block and the defender in Parallel Ready Stance.

ATTACK = always three middle section obverse punches in walking stance.

DEFENCE = as below

1. Defence: Left leg back walking stance, inner forearm block to the outside three times.
Counter: Reverse middle punch (left hand) Target: solar plexus.

2. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance, inner forearm block to the outside three times.
Counter: Move back (left) foot forward, then shift front foot to outside of attackers leg whilst performing a right knife-hand side strike in ‘L’ stance Target: neck/base of skull (NB: if the attacker is significantly taller then the kidney or floating ribs area should be chosen for the target)

3. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, outer forearm inwards block to the outside three times.
Counter: Back fist front strike (right hand) Target: Bridge of nose/temple.

4. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance outer forearm block to the outside two times. On third block slip front (left) foot to outside of attackers leg performing sitting stance
Counter: Demonstrate measure with the left hand, then execute two punches in fast motion. Target: Floating ribs.

5. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, outer forearm block to the inside two times. On third block slip front (right) foot out to form a sitting stance.
Counter: Execute a simultaneous right front punch. Target: Point of chin.

6. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, knife-hand block to the inside two times. On third block slip front (right) foot out to form a sitting stance.
Counter: Execute a simultaneous right inwards knife-hand strike. Target: Side of neck.

7. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, knifehand block to the inside two times. third move slide back at 45 degree angle to the right, forming right ‘L’ stance whilst executing middle knifehand -guarding block.
Counter: Right front snap kick, two punches in fast motion in walking stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus / Punches: point of chin.

8. Defence: Left leg back ‘L’ stance, palm heel block to the inside two times. Third move slide back at 45 degree angle to the right forming left ‘L’ stance, executing middle forearm-guarding block.
Counter : Left side piercing kick, left knife-hand side strike in ‘L’ stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus or face / Strike: temple.

9. Defence: Right leg back ‘L’ stance, inwards palm block to the outside twice. Third move slide right leg back at 45 degree angle to the left forming rigth ‘L’ stance, executing a forearm guarding block.
Counter : Right turning kick, knife-hand side strike in vertical stance.
Target: Kick: solar plexus / Strike: neck or base of skull.
