Assistant Instructors and Tournaments

Assistant Instructors
For the time being, Oliver Charles (3rd Dan) and Roger Husbands (1st Dan) will be the daily instructors of the Tottenham Branch. This is due to both of them wanting more experience and involvement in being a Taekwondo Instructors. This coincides with the main Instructor, Mr Biodun Sean Onipede, being extremely busy at work and struggling with teaching taekwondo 4 evenings a week. The feedback from student is they are doing a good job and I suppose the students also enjoy the change. Note that Mr Husbands is a fully qualified Instructor and trained with Mr Onipede back in the days, and Mr Charles is a 3rd Dan and former GTI Competitor of the Year.

C Henryanto
Catherine has won another tournament last weekend. Sadly due to a coloured belt grading over the weekend, the NLTKD had to spend more time with the coloured belts, but Catherine has kept herself fit and had the support of the GTI squad. Special thanks to Chris Davis of the GTI Squad who was ringside with Catherine in her fight. The GTI squad is there for student to take the training to the next level.

GTI National Open
The next GTI tournament is on Sunday 8th of July in Cheltenham. See poster below. Parents, please try and take your kid to the event. With all the best training in the world, unless the student actually attend tournaments, the student cannot reach their potential. This is true for any sport. Catherine is a great champion to a large part due to her parents efforts

2018 GTI English Open in Cheltenham

The NLTKD encourages students to attend tournaments. Tournaments are useful in introducing students to dealing with adversity. A student asked how a tournament who help him in real life. I said that if he is afraid to compete in a tournament with referees and safety equipment, then he will probably crap himself in a real self-defence situation. Tournaments will help you a little bit to deal with the adrenaline surge, nerves and reality of “fighting” a stranger. However I must admit nothing can prepare you against a mugger with an AK47 or Desert Eagle, just saying.

It also encourages students to learn to strive to be competitive and be the best they can be. These are life skills needed in a the highly competitive professional real world.  At the last GTI tournament in Cheltenham, the following student got

  • N. Henryanto – Bronze Sparring
  • C. Henryanto – Gold Sparring and Gold patterns
  • V. Vasiura – Bronze sparring and Bronze patterns
  • C. Craig-Mellentin – Bronze sparring
  • N. Kunchii – fought well but was unsuccessful.
  • A. Kunchii – silver sparring
  • J. Dlask- Gold Sparring and Gold patterns
  • A. Bejenariu – Bronze Sparring
  • R. Grigaliunaite– silver sparring
  • M. Tapper – Gold patterns and Bronze Sparring

Taekwondo and digging deep

I am going to repeat a story here that I mentioned in class today

When I originally join the NLTKD under Mr Albert Williamson-Taylor, I vividly remember one lesson where I (a yellow or green belt) had to spar a guy called Anthony Harris (Black belt). I was not sparring him but getting a thorough beating. After about a third of the sparring bout, I wanted to walk out of the hall, by two thirds of the way though, I was totally demoralised but Anthony Harris shouted at me to “keep fighting”. I wanted to rush him and wrestle him to the ground, but he was too good and glad the beating was over.

I wanted to stop training Taekwondo, but did not want to give up either. Anthony Harris told me in the middle of the beating to “keep fighting” so I decided to dig deep and train harder and better. I learnt a very important lesson from Anthony Harris. Anyone can beat up a weaker opponent, but the real test is fighting some better than you.

You need to prepare to fight someone better than you. If you are a current student and you are demoralised and upset at getting beat up by another student in class, I know how you feel. Dig deep, get in the trenches, and hang in there. Train harder to be fitter, stronger, more flexible and get more experienced.

Now, outside of Taekwondo, there will be times you feel beaten by school, work or just life in general, and want to give up. Again you grit your teeth and keep fighting on. I have won numerous tournaments but have always learnt more from defeat than victory.

In time, you may not be the best fighter or win, but you will have “no fear”. And that is the main criteria for being a NLTKD black belt.

North London Taekwondo in 2014 so far

The NLKD has a new website. The old website, which went live in 2008, was fine for that time, but as web technology and coding evolved, the website became harder to maintain and up date. The best solution is to rebuild the site. In the meantime here are the news update that should have been posted to the website.

To do this I will simply scroll through our North London Taekwondo Facebook page and repost stuff here that has already been posted there.

2014 GTI British Championship – 17 February

Great tournament notable because Mr Francois Onawelho-Loren came out of retirement for last tournament.
